Caligari has released gameSpace Light (gSL), a free, downloadable version of their 3D game graphics creation software. The Light version of gameSpace is suitable for independent game developers, students and hobbyists, claims Caligari.

gSL has no time limit and all the modelling and animation tools of the full version are present. The limitations are that you can only save models of up to 650 polygons and scenes of up to 5,000 polygons. Most of the import and export formats have been removed though it does allow the import and export of objects to gameSpace and .X formats.

gameSpace Light is available now for download from the Caligari gameSpace Web site. The full version of gameSpace costs $299 (around £165).

Caligari also announced the gameSpace Summer Shootout, a game developer's talent competition featuring more than $10,000 (around £5,500) in prizes. Details are available on their Web site, and submissions are accepted until June 21.
