Boris FX has released a Universal Binary version of its Boris Red compositing software, which can run as a plug-in for video editing software. Boris Red 4.1 can run on both Intel- and PowerPC-based Macs, as well as Windows systems.
According to Boris FX, Red 4.1 is one of the few effects applications to run natively on the new Intel-based Macintosh systems. It takes advantage of the improved OpenGL graphics hardware available in the Mac Pro and MacBook Pro models.
Red 4.1 can run as a plug-in for Final Cut Pro 5.1 on Intel Macs, although it's officially not supported. Apple says that After Effects-format plug-ins are not compatible with Final Cut Pro on Intel, as After Effects itself has yet to be updated for the Intel Macs. However, plug-in developers such as Boris FX and Red Giant have found a way round this.
Boris Red's features include 164 video filters, OpenGL-accelerated effects creation and playback, vector paint and rotoscoping, a raster paint engine, 2D and 3D titling, vector text, advanced 2D and 3D compositing with unlimited layers, keying, masking, mattes, Apply Modes, motion tracking, corner pinning and image stabilization.
Boris Red 4.1 costs £545 plus VAT. An update for owners of version 4 can be downloaded from the Boris FX Web site.
