Avid has bought all of the software owned by Character Animation Technologies (CAT), a developer of plug-ins for Autodesk 3ds Max. CAT becomes part of Softimage, but its software will continue to be sold, developed and supported for 3ds Max, according to statement from Softimage's VP and GM, Marc Stevens.

CAT's Character Animation Toolkit 2.0 (CAT 2.0) gives 3ds Max users a fully customizable animation rig that supports an unlimited numbers of limbs. It has a parametric motioncycle system, allows rig manipulation where users can assign all 3ds max animation controllers, and a mocap importer that supports popular motion capture formats. There's also a non-linear animation system that CAT says allows the use of all of these tools on different parts of the rig simultaneously.
