It seems that every month another ‘world’s fastest CD-R’ or ‘world’s fastest CD-RW’ is released. This month’s contender is LaCie’s CD-RW-161040, which as the name suggests offers 16x write, 10x rewrite and 40x read. According to LaCie this makes the drive the fastest writer so far (or at least until next month), capable of burning a full 650MB CD in around four minutes. It can also re-write a CD-RW in just over six minutes. The 161040 is available with SCSI-3 or IEEE 1394 (FireWire) ports, and is hot-pluggable under IEEE 1394. The SCSI-3 version of the drive costs £299 plus VAT, with the IEEE 1394 costing £339 plus VAT.
