Adobe has released version 1.1 of its PDF Print Engine print workflow technology. The system enables print companies to control and automate the use of PDFs that they receive from creatives to output on commercial presses, and collaborate with them using the JDF format.
The new version sees its first release for Mac OS X, and adds support for version 1.7 of PDF. Blending of process and spot colours is supported, as are proofing devices with extended colour gamuts. Processing of layered PDF files has been improved with RIP-centric PDF layer management.
According to Adobe, the PDF Print Engine benefits creative companies such as design agencies by allowing updates to the PDF specification to used sooner, as printers can update their workflows more quickly.
