CDX: the game

Monday 20 Nov 2006

Interactive studio Preloaded has just put the finishing touches to the world’s first broadband interactive film. Here’s how it was created…

Your first thought when first experiencing CDX – a world-first interactive film from the BBC – is that this is a heady brew of top- drawer Flash crossed with a seminal game such as Myst.

Created by interactive studio Preloaded, CDX is a brooding interactive drama that provides an eerie and engaging online experience.

The story details the exploits of Adam Foster, a TV exec who finds himself embroiled in an ancient conspiracy through his acquisition of a valuable prop.

The idea relates to the BBC’s Rome: Rise & Fall of an Empire TV show. “The BBC had a rough idea of a storyline in place, and the brief described their desire to create an interactive film experience,” says Preloaded lead designer Andrew Farrugia.

“Two main elements of the finished game – Adam and the blade – were present in the initial brief, however the eventual storyline, interactive components, and the content of Adam’s room were all decided during the early months of planning.

“Our initial thought was ‘wow’,” Farrugia adds. “It was such a different brief to anything we’d seen before. The idea of creating an interactive story around a fictional character involved in the production of a real TV mini- series was an exciting prospect.”

The result is an episodic, broadband game that sees main character Adam, limited to his apartment, tackle the mystery of a Roman sword, direct a treasure hunt in Rome, and solve clues via email, external Web sites, and a host of interactive features. It sports full-motion video composited into a virtual CG set.

CDX was composited using Adobe After Effects in 32-bit, allowing the team as much flexibility as possible when lighting the room. Jules Stevenson, who worked with Preloaded on CDX, explains the compositing.
