Wednesday 12 Jul 2006

Post house Baraka used new tool Mistika HD to colour grade, add special effects and create a title sequence on Rob Curry’s feature film The Boat People.

Baraka has finished the post production on British psychological thriller The Boat People. Directed by Rob Curry at Fifth Column Films, the film is a haunting tale of two sisters whose parents were killed when they were children in Vietnam.

Back in England as adults, the film’s supernatural twist sees the past resurface in the dreams of a boyfriend, forcing the pair to uncover the truth.

Baraka’s brief included colour grading, stabilizing shots, adding special effects, and creating the title sequence. The film was shot on location in Norfolk on HD using Panasonic’s Varicam, and is the first feature film to be completely graded in Mistika HD on Linux.

“The grade on this film was one which evolved with the storyline,” explains Eliot Milbourn, Baraka’s compositor and colour grader. “Rob wanted subtlety, a grade that would enhance the natural landscape and remain organic. At the beginning we see green English fields and rocky cliffs with happy people at sunny barbecues.

“By the end, in contrast we have de-saturated faces and aggressive, bleak landscapes with deeper blacks and mysterious blues and glows.
