Absolute creates vfx stunner

Tuesday 14 Feb 2006

The promo for The Delays’ latest single is a riot of psychedelic colour and animation courtesy of Absolute’s 2D and 3D vfx team.

“This was a challenging and enjoyable project, even though by the end, after working day and night, it felt like someone was putting magic mushrooms in my tea,” says lead Flame artist Phil Oldham of Absolute.
</p>

<p>
The project in question is the promo for Valentine, The Delays’ latest single released on the Rough Trade record label.
</p>

<p>
A visual orgy of psychedelic colour and kaleidoscopic animation, the video throws the viewer into several different worlds filled with dancing jellyfish, panda heads, submariners, bikini-clad girls with rabbit masks, and fire gods – all inter cut with footage of the band themselves.

<p>
Oldham and his fellow effects artists, along with Absolute’s new 3D department, worked solidly for three weeks to provide the 3D and 2D effects that matched director Simon Henwood’s vision for the video.
</p>

<p>
“The original brief set forward by Simon was to create a world with no beginning or end, just a perpetual loop of environments,” explains Oldham.
</p>

<p>
“With this sweeping concept in hand, Karsten, Jesper, Jonas and myself began toying with a few ideas. After a few meetings we had some fascinating concepts. Eager to not to dismiss any ideas, we came up with an open yet conceivable plan.
</p>

<p>
“I think Simon had an inkling, but none of us knew that the promo was going to grow arms, legs, tails and several heads.”

<i>Talking tornados</i><BR>
The promo starts with the band members shown against a chromatic 3D tornado. “The tornado was animated using a combination of object blend shapes and expressions to create the chaotic randomness needed,” explains Jesper Bentzen, Combustion artist at Absolute.
</p>

<p>
“Afterwards, Maya opticalFX lights were applied and animated on a separate layer to add a glowing feel to the tornado. The scene was rendered out on separate passes in Mental Ray and composited on Flame for the final touches.”
