New Blood - part one

Tuesday 05 Jul 2005

Digit presents the hottest new talent from this year's D&AD New Blood show – check out the graduates on the verge of taking on the creative industries. Part 1 of 2.

Creative talent is the lifeblood of the industry – and where better place to start shifting out young-gun designers and bright young artists than the world-famous D&AD New Blood exhibition, which premiered at the end of June 2005 at Old Billingsgate in London.

Representing the blood, sweat, and creative juices of graduates in graphic design, advertising, digital media, packaging and product design, illustration, photography and communication arts, D&AD New Blood is a veritable feast of this year’s graduate talent.

Digit teamed up with the D&AD to exclusively showcase the best New Blood work. Each piece is accompanied by a description of the brief, as well as contact details for each student, should you want to end their Pot Noodle diets and help them work for food. Or beer.

Photography Exhibition Catalogue (live brief): The project was to design an exhibition catalogue for a music photographer called Chrissie Rowntree. The bands that she photographs are mainly punk and ska. To represent this style the catalogue is reminiscent of punk fanzines; it has a cut-up, handmade feel. It is printed on brown envelope paper which has quite a coarse texture and the cover is made out of cord to echo this. The whole piece has an energetic feel and therefore expresses her style of photography.

MP3 player promotion: The character shown is part of an advertising movie promoting the benefits of owning an MP3 player and the musical freedom it can give. The 3D character, internal and external environments are modelled, rigged, animated and rendered using Alias Maya in the DMU Maya animation labs. The final piece will be composited in After Effects and final movie assembled in Adobe Premiere.

Leicester Tigers Annual Report 2004: Spread from proposed Leicester Tigers Annual Report 2004. The layout is based around the core idea of ‘the business of rugby’. It takes into account the two sides to the company’s operation – the business side, and the playing side. It also portrays the fact that everyone involved with the club, from the chairman down to the fans, are former or current players of some kind.

Never Ending Statement: A workbook designed to discourage student applications to graphic design. The endless task of coming up with ideas, being rejected, and making alterations is presented via a monotonous, B&W aesthetic.

Japanese Packaging: The aim of this was to explore contrasts in international design, and produce a work that sits comfortably in the chosen market of Japanese toys. An added difficulty was to try and make an old-fashioned spinning top appealing to a youth market obsessed with electrical gadgets and games. Full portfolio at www.limeygreen.co.uk

Prison Drama Information Brochure: A booklet about the work of a prison drama therapy company. The ODD (Offenders Drama & Development) theatre company employs a Brazilian technique – and this influence is reflected through the brochure’s Brazilian style. The headline typeface was designed for the brochure – the rounded counters resemble open mouths and dramatic expression, as well as prison keys.
