Gran Salon Mexico - an annual contemporary illustration fair – has teamed up with the Secretary of Economic Development of Mexico City and artist Alejandro Magallanes to take the dreariness out of commutes. A noble and worthy pursuit, I’m sure we’ll all agree.

The special edition of the Mexico City metro ticket celebrates local food markets, a bustling, vibrant ingredient of the capital. The market featured on the ticket is Melchor Muzquiz, which sells elaborate flower arrangements alongside food.

The ticket, which will be sold from today, has been printed a mind-boggling 10 million times – which becomes less bewilderingly big when you know that an average of 4.5 million passengers use the metro daily.

We love the bright colours, confident lines and brilliant characterisation in the illustration – a refreshing change from the dull, uninspiring endlessness of a metro system and a welcome reminder of what is above ground.

Last year, Dr. Alderete created a metro ticket, also based on local markets.
