MPC has created a CG troll that looks as if it has stepped from the pages of a fairytale, as part of its postproduction on a TV ad for Cadbury Trebor Bassett’s Maynard brand.

Directed by Harold Zwart of Upstart films, the spots sees our hero Gregor strolling beside a picturesque canal. As he passes under a bridge, a troll bursts from the water and blocks his path. “Feed me diamonds or feel my wrath!” the Troll demands, and then picks up Gregor, and holds him out over the water.

Diamond-less, Gregor offers him his bag of Maynards Wine Gums. Enraptured by the sweets, the troll lets Gregor go on his way.

MPC’s challenge was to create a believable but non-threatening troll that behaved in a naturalistic way. The creature was first modelled and textured in Maya using drawn and maquette references, before being rigged for animation. As several close-ups were needed, lots of attention was given to facial detail and the range of the character’s expressions.

The troll then was composited into the live action, and lipsync animation was refined for two shots. Secondary animation (for the wobble on his belly), lighting effects (translucency on his ears), and his loincloth were then added, before the shots were composited in Inferno.
