Apple adds H.264 codec to QuickTime
Apple has announced that the H.264/Advanced Video Codec (AVC) will be incorporated in its QuickTime software in an upcoming release next year. The video technology has been ratified by the DVD Forum for use in the High Definition (HD) DVD format; it was jointly developed by the Motion Picture Expert's Group (MPEG) and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), and has been ratified into the MPEG-4 specification as well.

Two Final Cut plug-ins debut
Digital Heaven has announced the release of two new plug-ins for Final Cut Pro and Final Cut Express: DH_Box and DH_WhipPan. The former helps create picture-in-picture effects while the latter simulates a camera whip pan transition, complete with five royalty-free "whoosh" sound effects.

QuickTime adds Lossless Encoder
In conjunction with Wednesday's release of iTunes 4.5, Apple has also posted an update to QuickTime, the company's core audio and video media handling technology for both Mac OS and Windows. The new release, QuickTime 6.5.1, adds the QuickTime Lossless Encoder and improves AAC encoding. It's available for download from the Web site now.

Final Cut Express 2.0 review

Apple demos HD MPEG-4 codec

Discreet apps to talk Final Cut Pro
Discreet has announced that it plans to support Final Cut Pro’s .XML-based interchange format in upcoming versions of its editing and visual effects systems. This means that editorial decisions made by users with Final Cut Pro will be directly transferable to Discreet's smoke and fire editing and finish systems, as well as its lustre digital grading and colour correction system.

Real offers OS X encoding plug-in
RealNetworks has introduced a beta version of its Real 10 Export Plug-in for Mac OS X. The software enables video editors using Final Cut Pro, After Effects, Xpress Pro and other software to export their work to RealAudio 10 and RealVideo 10 formats. The company expects to offer support for additional applications including Discreet Cleaner this summer.
